Hosting The World’s Leaders during UNGA 2014

In the months and weeks leading up the this year’s United Nations General Assembly, our Specialty Markets team was tasked with coordinating the largest arrival of VIPs we have seen in a long time. They had unique requests to fulfill and cultural sensitivities to coordinate, with 25 different delegations checking in over a timespan of two weeks and taking up a large majority of our occupancy.

This required an intense amount of synergy between every team in the hotel- from housekeeping to culinary to events to security.  Through it all, we not only made this UNGA session at our hotel occur quite smoothly- we aided history.
As our Director of Security Oscar Herrera said in an email sent out to the management team the week after UNGA,
“We should all take a moment and reflect that what occurred at the Waldorf Astoria will be a part of history that will have an impact on how the diplomatic world will be shaped in the years to come.
We had meetings held here and agreements finalized that will be seen and heard by others on the news.
We were all a part of it and experienced it live as it occurred.”

With our reputation as the “Host to the World,” the Waldorf Astoria is no stranger to fielding VIP requests and ensuring the security of our guests and residents. But as is evidenced by this most recent UNGA, perhaps the most important thing to remember about this iconic hotel is that we are more than the host for these historic occasions. We are the inspirational environment that influences them.
